A Rose a Day 1. Aachener Dom
Aachener Dom possesses an ethereal quality by evoking a light from within its flower even on the grayest day. The light effect comes from the inner silvery pink shade of its petals slipping into darkening, increasingly intense outer coral pink petals to combine in a rare natural glow.
Aka : Pink Panther
The flowers open slowly, and have a strongly defining character throughout their long life. A beautifully shaped bud opens to a beacon of light with wavy, fluted petals of great substance until at last they fall cleanly to the ground. Each phase has great charm and strength. This magical rose delights the senses with a reliable, consistent fresh apple scent.
Aachener Dom has been an excellent rose in my garden. Several years ago an 8’x 6’ fence panel blew down on top of it during a fierce windstorm and broke its canes off at the union. Aachener Dom bounced back fully by early spring to produce sturdy healthy canes, good foliage and an abundance of beautiful, fragrant and continuous blooms. An excellent rose.
Aachen is a German spa city Charlemagne favored with the construction of the Aachener Dom. Charlemagne began construction around 792 and was buried in a vault there in 814. From 936 to 1531 the Aachen Chapel was the church of coronation for thirty German kings and twelve queens. Much of this ancient, beautiful city was destroyed during WWII but the Aachener Dom was miraculously spared.
Aachener Dom holds a special place in my heart, as Aachen is my mother’s hometown and a city of considerable character and history.
