Eugene de Beauharnais (Sept 3, 1781- Feb 21,1824)
Eugene’s father Alexandre, Viscount de Beauharnais was executed by guillotine in 1794 during France’s Reign of Terror. His mother, Josephine went on to marry Napoleon I in 1796. Napoleon seems to have been genuinely fond of him and officially adopted him in 1806. Eugene proved to be an accomplished administrator, business manager and military man.
From Peter Hicks in the Revue du Sorvenir Napolean:
Hortense said of her brother Eugene –
“he was brave, loyal, straightforward, generous, incapable of not keeping his words, preferring honor to high rank, noble obscurity to power poorly taken, duty to pleasure”
